Pearls

• There are proponents for both operative and nonoperative treatment of achilles tendon ruptures. This decision is generally made on the functional status of the patient and risk of surgical complications.
• A negative thompson test does not completely rule out an Achilles tendon rupture (an intact plantaris can produce weak plantar flexion).
• Ultrasound can be used to help distinguish between partial and complete tears.
