Pearls

  • The sustentaculum tali is a horizontal shelf on the anteromedial portion of the calcaneus. It articulates with the talus.
  • This is infrequently an isolated injury and is difficult to detect on X-rays. Typically requires CT for diagnosis.
  • Suspect in cases of anteromedial calcaneus pain with no other clear injury.
  • Patients will be non-weight bearing for 10-12 weeks if non-displaced. If displaced >2mm will likely require surgery.
