Pearls

Posterior hip precautions after reduction:
– Don’t lift the knee higher than the hip.
– Don’t flex the hip past 90°.
– Don’t sit on low chairs or beds.
– Don’t cross legs/keep thighs apart 30 degrees or more.

  • Don’t point toes in towards midline.

Up to 10% of hip dislocations may require reduction in the OR.

Complications

Risk of avascular necrosis if reduction is delayed.
