Pearls

  • Present with point tenderness 2-3 cm distal to the ulnar styloid process.
  • Pain with resisted wrist extension.
  • Typically are avulsion fractures that are due to traction from radiotriquetral and/or triquetroscaphoid ligaments.
  • Splinting for 3-4 weeks allows these attachment to heal back into place.
  • For dorsal avulsion injuries a removable volar wrist splint can be used.

Complications

Body fractures are at risk for lunotriquetral ligament injury. This can be evaluated in orthopedic clinic follow-up.
